Our friends have a timeshare and invited us to visit Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown, Va for a few days with them.
It's a great time of the year to enjoy Williamsburg during the Holidays. The square is decorated beautifully and at this time of the year there are plenty of tourists, us included.
We also visited Historic Jamestowne and Yorktown Battlefield. Historic Jamestowne offers many activities for exploring the first English settlement in North America. We witnessed archaeologists working on recent artifact discoveries. It was amazing to see!
Preservation Virginia was founded in 1889 to save Historic Jamestown and other historic properties from decay and destruction. They have preserved and maintained the property for over 100 years..The National Park Service purchased the remainder of the Island in 1934.
There is a lot to see regarding Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktowne Battlefield and I can't possibly write or inform you enough in a small post. It would be a great summer trip for you and the family. We were in the area for 4 days and my head is still spinning with all the information that was presented to us.
On a last note we were able to experience the Grand Illumination which took place on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012 which in the 18th century was an occasion like the arrival of a new governor, the king's birth night or a festive ball was celebrated with fireworks, bonfires, and lighting of candles in the windows of private homes. It was a beautiful brisk cold night so hot cider was in abundance. Here are a few of the photos during the illumination. Fireworks and all! Enjoy!
